Install mod_frontpage under RH8, RH9, RHES1, RHEW1, FC1 or FC2

The main difference between doing this on Redhat distrobutions and other distro's is the location of binaries since mod_frontpage has a somewhat querky install process. If you locate the binaries and change the paths this should work with most linux distros. I have my own Apache builds so mine are a bit different here.

  1. Download fp_install.sh.gz and fp50.linux.tar.gz from http://www.rtr.com/fpsupport/fp2002_sr1.1.htm.
  2. Unpack the shell script and move both files to /usr/local/src/
    cp -p fp_install.sh.gz /usr/local/src/
    cp -p fp50.linux.tar.gz /usr/local/src/
    cd /usr/local/src
    gzip -d fp_install.sh.gz
This will leave you with /usr/local/src/fp_install.sh.
  3. Now we will run the shell script :
    sh fp_install.sh
  4. Edit httpd.conf with the following information, apache needs to have .htaccess enabled:
    AllowOverride All
  5. Example installation/upgrade of what you are going to see, and what I entered highlighted in red.
    [root@computer src]# sh fp_install.sh

Step 1. Setting Up Installation Environment

    Setting umask 002

This script will step the user through upgrading existing and installing

done before continuing. It is recommended that the FrontPage installation
directory, server configuration file directory, and all web content be
backed up before continuing with this installation.

incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or
exclusion may not apply to you. This Limited Warranty gives you
specific legal rights. You may have others which vary from
    state/jurisdiction to state/jurisdiction.

If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
    - add LIBDIR to the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable
    during execution
    - add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH' environment variable
    during linking
    - use the `-Wl,--rpath -Wl,LIBDIR' linker flag
    - have your system administrator add LIBDIR to `/etc/ld.so.conf'

See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.

Checking for existing FrontPage web servers to upgrade...

Existing web servers were found; do you want to upgrade them now?
(If you answer "no", you can safely run this script again and answer "yes"
    to upgrade your servers later.)

    Upgrade now (y/n) [Y]? y

    The file /usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/upgrade_results.txt will
contain Success/Fail status for the upgrades. When the upgrade is
complete you should examine this file to make sure that all of the
    upgrades completed successfully.

    Preparing to chown webs...

All requested upgrades to the new FrontPage Server Extensions have taken place.
The next step is to chown the web in order to guarantee that the extensions
will work properly. At this point you have two options:

    1. This script will prompt you interactively for an owner and group of
each web and then perform the chown. If you do not have a lot of
webs you might want to choose this option.

    2. This script will generate a script, which you can edit to fill in the
owner and group for each web, to run at a later date. If you have a
large number of webs you might want to choose this option.

Would you like interactive prompting for each webs owner/group (y/n) [Y]?

    /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start

NOTE: Remember that mod_frontpage derives off of Apache's .htaccess. So Apache will need the override directive set to all and every user created with frontpage is irrelivent to unix users. They are simply text names with text roles using MD5 hash's to authenticate with frontpage.
